In the early episodes, Nami is portrayed as an opportunistic and materialistic person, with a weakness for treasures and money. However, over time her true character and motivations come to light. She was forced to live as a thief to buy freedom for her home village from the tyrannical pirate Arlong. Nami is also incredibly loyal and willing to do anything for her friends.
