Luffy gains superhuman abilities after eating the "Gum-Gum" fruit, which made his body as elastic as rubber. His abilities allow him to perform various acrobatics and powerful attacks, but at the same time make him completely vulnerable to electric attacks and unable to swim.

His distinctive straw hat is a symbol of a promise made to Shanks, one of the Four Emperors and his childhood idol. Luffy is extremely determined and will not back down from any challenge that stands in his way to obtaining the greatest treasure in the world, One Piece, and becoming the Pirate King.
