There are some anime we watch with huge curiosity, but if someone asked whether we’d actually want to live in their world, the answer would be simple: absolutely not.
Some universes may look beautiful and atmospheric, but living in them would be a real nightmare. In Tokyo Ghoul, you never know if the person next to you might turn out to be a ghoul. In Attack on Titan, everyday life means living in fear of Titans. And Made in Abyss may look magical at first, but the deeper you go, the more dangerous it becomes.
It’s similar with The Promised Neverland, everything seems peaceful at the beginning, but the truth about that world is truly terrifying. In Chainsaw Man, demons are part of everyday life, so an ordinary day can quickly turn into a fight for survival. Even Sword Art Online, which starts like a gamer’s dream come true, quickly proves that a virtual world can also become a deadly trap.
There are also titles that are scary because of their atmosphere alone. Another gives you the feeling from the start that something is very wrong. Higurashi: When They Cry shows how a quiet village can turn into a place full of paranoia and violence. In Parasyte: The Maxim, the worst part is that the danger can look completely normal.
Then there’s Blame!, a huge, cold and empty world where humans feel like tiny, insignificant dots. The Empire of Corpses also doesn’t sound like a place anyone would want to wake up in, death, experiments and a dark atmosphere speak for themselves.
These series are great to watch exactly because we can follow them safely from the couch. But if we actually had to live there? Most of us probably wouldn’t even make it to the end of the first episode.
